During the winter of 2001, I started to plan a cycling trip in the spring. I'd never done any long distance cycling before and I wanted to try some other methods of travel so it seemed like a good idea. So I bought some panniers for my bike and peddled out of Copenhagen on my 30th birthday.

By the time I arrived in Paris, several weeks later, I'd covered 1656km (1029miles) in 5 countries, without even a single puncture.
