grib files

Grib files are forecasts of pressure and wind vectors which have been encoded into a compressed format for a specific area. These are therefore much smaller files than graphical forecast charts and are faster to download over a mobile internet connection. The files can then be displayed in a suitable viewer program, and the requested forecast intervals can be cycled through. The following viewer is free.
download airmail then
download airmail grib / fax viewer
then install both (you probably won't use Airmail, but the viewer won't install unless it's there)
now you can download up-to-date grib files from the following sites then open them with Viewer
navcenter grib downloads
raymarine grib downloads

grib files by email
Alternatively, you can send an email request to the Saildocs server query@saildocs.com and it will automatically email you the requested grib file free. Unless you're in an internet cafe, clicking on the following link will compose a sample request which you can send
grib email request

email request format
this explains the format of the email request
send grib:lat0,lat1,lon0,lon1|dlat,dlon|VTs|Params
lat0,lat1,lon0,lon1 are the latitude longitude limits (whole degrees followed by N/S or W/E)
dlat, dlon is the grid increment in degrees (e.g. "1,1" for a 1-deg by 1-deg grid), if omitted the default is "2,2". The minimum increment is 1 degree, and whole degrees are recommended (e.g. avoid "1.5,1.5").
VTs is a comma separated list of valid times (e.g. "24,48,72"), if omitted the default is "24,48,72". Valid times are 00, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 96, 120, 144, 168, 192, 216, 240 hours.
Params is a comma separated list of parameters ("PRMSL" for mean sea level pressure, "U_GRD,V_GRD" for the surface wind. The default is "PRMSL,U_GRD,V_GRD".

a sample email request would be
send grib:20N,60N,40E,30W
which would be the same as
send grib:20N,60N,40E,30W|2,2|24,48,72|PRMSL,U_GRD,V_GRD
The email subject can be anything.
Do not insert any spaces. The vertical bar is the 'shift \' key.

repeat requests
To have the same grib files emailed to you daily, change send to sub
e.g. sub grib:20N,60N,40E,30W
and the files will be sent to you daily around 12UTC for a default of 14 days.
To select the number of days you wish to receive them, add a space, then
days=7 or however many days you would like to receive them
e.g. sub grib:20N,60N,40E,30W days=7
days=0 means for an indefinite period
to cancel the request, send the same email but change sub to cancel
